Heat of the Summer, Coupled by Job Market

I just got back from visiting my family in Texas and my sister in DC. Both places seemed more attractive to me now that I had left, but also jobs in public sector seemed very prevelant. The more and more I think about it, the less I want to stay here and tough out the economy. I love being able to experience great internships, but I would like to able to stay on. That seems harder and harder with hiring freezes.

Regardless, the stint out here in the Valley of Sun might be short. Although, my sister warns me of the dreaded cold and the extremely fast-paced and competitve nature in the DC area, I am still not phased. I probably will visit in the winter just to taste the cold weather.

Whatever path I choose, I have learned much out here and it has been a great experience. Internship opportunities like the one at MAG have made the move out here from Central Texas worth it.

  1. Blake - if you are interested in moving to DC when you graduate, you should consider applying for the Presidential Management Fellowship program in the Fall. More information on that can be found at: http://spa.asu.edu/new/pmf.htm. This has last year's info, but the process shoudl be similiar this year too.

  2. I have been looking around and applying for several federal positions both out here and in DC Metro area. I am told the process is very long, so I would like to get ahead of the game in that aspect. I will definitely look into the PMF program again. I am also looking to get involved in the Dept of Energy's Career Intern Program and the Student Career Experience Program. I have also been looking into consulting firms and government contract organizations. We will see how it all pans out.

  3. Applying for a federal job is a long process. The PMF itself (which is usually considered a fast-track) lasts from September to April. In addition, different agencies will often hire their own management interns for recent MPA grads - the EPA, GAO and HUD are some in the recent past our grads have gotten positions
